With Supply Shocks & Fed Rate Hikes, PMS Performance Dips in May 2022

May month saw a dip in the monthly returns of PMS schemes due to the war-induced supply shocks and inflation-induced Fed rate hikes. Only 40 of the 270 PMS equity schemes in the PMS Bazaar radar outperformed NIFTY and just one equity scheme out of them produced a positive monthly return in May 2022.

Here are the top 10 PMS strategies identified from the 270 equity strategies monitored & analyzed by PMS Bazaar.

The Portfolio Return Optimiser Strategy of Agreya Capital Advisors LLP tops the list, yielding a monthly return of 1.79% in May 2022. This strategy aims to enhance the returns of underlying equity and debt holding by investing in derivatives for capturing short-term trends in the equity market indices.

The BOP Strategy of MOTILAL OSWAL AMC occupies second place, yielding a monthly return of -0.50% in May 2022. This strategy aims to predominantly invest in Small and Midcap stocks with a focus on identifying potential winners.

The Core Value Strategy - Concentrated of O3 Securities Private Limited occupies 3rd place, yielding a monthly return of -0.57% in May 2022. This strategy aims to achieve capital appreciation through investment in a diversified portfolio of strong businesses, purchased at a reasonable valuation.

The Small-cap category recorded an average monthly return of -7.24% in May 2022. 9 out of 15 PMS strategies monitored in this category outperformed BSE Small cap, which stood at -7.83%.


The Micro Strategy of Centrum PMS tops this category, yielding a monthly return of -3.91%. Followed by it, we have the Little Champs Strategy of Marcellus (-4.55%) and the Small Cap Strategy of NAFA Asset Managers (-4.55%), constituting the top 3 performers in this category. 


Small & Midcap:

The small & mid-cap category yielded an average monthly return of -7.03% in May 2022. 

The Emerging Star Strategy of Composite Investments Private Limited tops this list with a monthly return of -3.21%. Followed by it we have the SSP Strategy of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC (-4.48%) and the Growth Strategy of Green Lantern Capital LLP (-5.25%), constituting the top 3 performers in this category.

Mid-cap: 

The Mid-cap category recorded an average monthly return of -6.59% in May 2022. 8 out of 21 PMS strategies monitored in this category outperformed NIFTY MIDCAP 100, which stood at -5.33%.


The Ace Midcap Strategy of Asit C Mehta Investment Intermediates Ltd tops this list, yielding a monthly return of -2.80%. Followed by it, we have the Gems Strategy of Emkay Investment Managers (-3.48%) and the Good & Clean Strategy of Ambit Investment Advisors (-3.98%), constituting the top-3 strategies of this category. 



Large & Mid-cap:
The Large & Mid-cap category recorded an average monthly return of -4.06% in May 2022. 

The Upside AI 250 Strategy of the Upside AI tops this category with a monthly return of - 2.42%. Followed by it, we have the SRE Shield Strategy of Sykes & Rays Equities (-2.42%) and the Alpha Strategy of Green Lantern Capital LLP (-2.89%), constituting the top 3 strategies of this category.


Large-cap: 
The Large-cap category recorded an average monthly return of -3.72% in May 2022. 7 out of 22 strategies monitored under this category outperformed NIFTY, which stood at -3.03%.  


In this category, the Portfolio Return Optimiser Strategy of Agreya Capital Advisors LLP tops the overall list as well as the Large Cap Category with a monthly return of 1.79%. Out of 270 PMS schemes under the radar, this is the only scheme to yield positive returns in the month of May 2022. The Multi-cap category recorded an average monthly return of -5.47% in May 2022. 52 out of 147 PMS strategies monitored under this category outperformed BSE 500, which stood at -4.48%


The BOP Strategy of Motilal Oswal AMC tops the list with a monthly return of -0.50%. Followed by it, we have the Core Value Strategy – Concentrated (-0.57%) and Core Value Strategy - Regular (-0.93) of O3 Securities Private Limited, constituting the top 3 performers of this category. 


Thematic investment:
The Thematic category recorded an average monthly return of -5.40% in May 2022

The MNC PMS Strategy of Anand Rathi Advisors tops the list, recording monthly returns of -0.75%. Followed by it, we have India next Portfolio Strategy of Renaissance (-1.88%) and the Rise Strategy of Invesco (-2.34%) constituting the top 3 strategies of this category.
